About the grades

Talent score (20–99)

One rating of how good a player is right now, built from her box-score stats and adjusted so flukes, team pace, and small samples don’t distort it. 66+ is a star, 40–65 a rotation player, under 40 fringe.

Trade value (20–99)

What a player is worth in a trade — on the SAME 20–99 scale as Talent. It blends how good she is with her contract surplus and her age, so a young, productive player on a cheap deal is worth the most. This is the number the grade weighs, shown as the “TV” badge on each roster row.

Minutes & samples

We fold in last season too — more for veterans, whose level is steadier — and don’t over-read a few games or a short hot streak. Rookies get draft-pedigree credit until they’ve played enough.

Contracts & aging

Contract surplus asks whether a player is worth more or less than she’s paid; future years are projected on the league’s aging curve. Cheap young risers grade up; long deals for aging vets grade down.

Availability & dead money

Players ruled out lose value for the games they’ll miss; waived players’ dead money stays on the team’s cap, so the math matches the real sheets.

Team direction

Win-now, retool, or rebuild comes from live standings and roster age — refreshed daily, never hand-set. A team that becomes a seller gets graded like one.

Composite grade

Each side is scored on cap legality plus four factors — talent, team direction, contract surplus, and positional fit. One star outweighs two role players.

Full formulas, the aging curve, and data sources are on the methodology page.
